Captain is about to do something dangerous. Recall his Psychoparadigm to try and evaluate his chance of success.
You took his yearly reading with the neural bridge at the start of the shift. It's fresh on your mind.

PSYCHOPARADIGM: When I move, it hurts. When I'm still, it aches.
Been that way for a while. And it's more that way every long year. Joints wear down, you know, the connective tissues and soft slack in everything get thinner and tenser. When you grow older, it doesn't start aching and hurting. It just happens more. See, even back in my prime -- back when I played college ball, I ever tell you about that? -- I bet I'd ache if I didn't move a whole day, and I sure did hurt if I moved too much. And a man gets older every day, and the walls close in. When I move, it hurts, and when I'm still, it aches.
When I move, it hurts. I met with the CMO today, doc says our crew's gonna start taking casualties if I don't cut the corporate pay-to-mend requirements and have the medbay work salaried, free healthcare for the crew. Saw men shouting, screaming, at each other's throats. Guess this means the surgeons get better cash but the chemists get it worse. It hurts. Had to find a middle path, had to raise Chemistry's pay, then all medical's. Not gonna look good on the reports. Better than the hurt.
When I'm still, it aches. One of the engineers got hurt on the job. Burns. Missing arm. Nerves all seared out, can't fit a replacement. Corporate says I gotta stand aside, let an insurance investigator figure out some way to make sure he doesn't get a payout, 'cause the fund's dry. It aches. Had to find a middle path, award him enough corporate merit medals under the table that he can sell 'em for enough to get by for a couple months. Corporate will ask hard questions. Better than the ache.
The walls are closing in. Every day, the ache's a little worse with less motionlessness. Every minute, the hurt's a little worse with less motion.
Will you forgive me, son? Will you not hold it against me? I just need a minute without the pain.
